I Owe My Thanks To…

Can you believe that it’s already March? Where has all the time gone? I mean, really! It feels like it was still January only just last week!

Like time slipping by unnoticed, we often don’t recognize inspiration in our work. (Smooooth transition. I know, right?) Stories like Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella have been in our collective unconscious for so long that we don’t recognize the elements of them that we’re recycling into new stories. That’s one of the reasons why there are so many “nothing new” quotes. You all know at least one (or a variation of). Things like:

  • There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know. –Harry S Truman
  • There is nothing new except what has been forgotten. –Marie Antoinette
  • There is nothing new, from Greek mythology to Shakespeare to every romcom ever made, we’re just reimagining the same 12 story plots over and over again –so what makes people keep watching and listening? It’s all about the character. –Jeremy Renner

Two Sentence Horror Stories

First of all… ugh, I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I last posted. Bad me.

Secondly, I’ve seen the reddit question of “What is the best horror story you can come up with in two sentences” posted around. On pinterest, Facebook, I think I first read about it on BuzzFeed, and I friend linked me to the “best” 20 of them just recently. So I got curious and decided to check out the original reddit thread. I was only able to get approximately 80% through the posts (not counting comments/replies) before I admitted defeat, so it’s very possible there were more great two sentence stories that I just didn’t see.

Prompts

I get a lot of my story ideas from dreams. Sometimes it’s a song that sparks something. Ideas can be lurking in the shower, a chance encounter, news articles or headlines, or in another work (book, movie, etc.) When you don’t have a place for the ideas that come to you what do you do with them? NaNoWriMo’s Adoption Society is one place to share them. Maybe they’ll even find a good home. Check out the various threads on the forum for ideas ranging from plot ideas, to new characters, to entire worlds, or even snappy one-off lines (my Villain Catch Phrases came from NaNo, for example).

But this post is going to be some ideas I’ve had over the years that, for one reason or another, just never went anywhere. Feel free to adopt, tweak, or use as a springboard for your own ideas. No citation needed here, though if it ends up published let me know. I’d love to read what you came up with!
